epiphany

so i was reading some old posts from this time last year, they seemed waaay more interesting and crazy. i realized that last year i was depressed and angry about law school and life at law school. now i must admit that i really like law school and life at law school. its true, i've become one of those annoying law students who are involved, smiling, relatively well adjusted, et. when did this happen? why did it happen? does this mean interesting blog posts are only available to the mentally unstable. i mean if its true for great art, why not blogs?

on another note i liked casino royale. daniel craig can be my bond any day:)

Well, "interesting" is pretty much defined by conflict. I don't think there's ever been a good story that was just about a happy situation, and the fictional characters that are most intriguing have problems, sometimes serious problems. I mean, would Mulder have been interesting if everyone believed him?

I think this was the problem with Superman. In the 30's, 40's, and 50's, Americans had more conflict in their lives than they wanted, so stable, invincible Superman was a source of inspiration. Socially and economically, things calmed down in the 80's and 90's and suddenly, an invincible hero with no moral conflict is just not interesting. People became more interested in Batman, and not the happy, well-adjusted Adam West Batman. They wanted the brooding Dark Knight portrayed in the comic books. That's why the 1990 Batman did so well. The whole movie, hero included, was so dark.

Lacking any real conflict in my own life, I think I can sympathize, but don't worry, I'm sure you'll encounter woe and misery not long after graduation.
